The Great Gray Wall

New Yorker Mary Lowengard, treated at the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at Hartford Hospital, launches effort to transform the view for infusion center patients.

When first her mother and then Mary were diagnosed with cancer in late 2016, they received chemotherapy at the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center. While they found the treatment rooms comfortable, the views left something to be desired. Beyond the garden that was dormant in winter lay a grey concrete prison-like wall.

Now an effort has been launched to change that view to a garden mural that will bloom year-round painted directly on the wall. The design will convey peace, joy and healing through a vibrant scene that will change from season to season. The process of transforming the concrete wall into a work of art will be as much a part of the “story” as the final product.
