A Celebration of 25 Years of the Black & Red
On February 14, 1992, Hartford Hospital hosted its first Black & Red Ball. Benefiting babies with heart problems, the first Black & Red event more than doubled the organizing committee’s goal of $50,000, raising $110,000 through the sale of 400 tickets and outright donations of $40,000.
Today, the hospital’s signature fund-raiser is simply the Black & Red. The ball has become a gala, bringing nearly 1,200 guests to The Bushnell for a dynamic night of entertainment, dining, dancing, and honors. Over the past three years, the event has raised $1 million for its chosen beneficiary. Over the past 25 years, $10 million has been raised. The growth of the gala is a direct reflection of the generosity of Hartford Hospital’s community and its dedication to the well-being of those we serve.
Funds raised through the 2016 Black & Red will benefit the Bone & Joint Institute at Hartford Hospital. Under construction at Retreat Avenue and Seymour Street in Hartford, the Bone & Joint Institute will bring innovative, coordinated orthopedic and musculoskeletal care into one facility, integrating all elements of treatment, including primary and specialty care, diagnostics, rehabilitation, rheumatology, neurology, and pain management.
